As I type this, snow is still falling from the sky. It’s been snowing over 24hrs now and Bklyn is covered with a thick blanket of the white stuff. There’s so much snow in fact, that the usual phenomenon of fresh powder turned to a dirty gray sloppy mess in an instant hasn’t happened yet and I don’t think it’ll happen for a while.
This is the view from my 3rd story window looking up the block –

This is looking across the street –

Down the block. Normally you can see the Statue of Liberty in the harbor but as you can see in the picture, it’s still a white out –

At this point I don’t if I’ll still be attending this year’s Crotona Midnight Run because the only kind of bike I can see being able to run through a foot of slush is a dual sport bike with a sidecar attached.
If you’re still interested in attending this event (like me), you might want to get in touch with the Ramapo Club, the folks that put on the event. One of their road captains will attempt to ride the route tomorrow afternoon and he’ll decide whether it’s possible to hold the event or not. Snow and ice is one thing, but the threat of falling branches is another huge concern.
Ramapo’s hotline – 914-422-1806 Call anytime tomorrow afternoon. Finger crossed!

Maybe it won’t be so bad. Over my way the Sun is making an appearance and the roads are just mush, looked considerably worse just a few hours ago.
At this point I’m hoping that the storm will continue on so that the RMC have no choice but to postpone. Overnight temps for the area around Carmel (where the 1st leg ends and the 2nd begins) will be below freezing… Hello black ice, pleased to meet you.
its very wet and sloppy. unless it was going to be above 40 from here on – you’re right black ice could be treacherous.
Fuzz – Yeah, a lot of the route will be near water or really small back roads and it’s the black ice I’m worried about the most
The roads are clearing near me but they are really wet and still sloppy in some spots. I hope they postpone it i wanted to do it…..
Did you get like 2 feet of snow in NYC Thursday to Friday?
I heard some report in passing that the Harriman area had like 5 feet of standing snow with the new accumulation and NYC had like 2 feet that had fallen.
Are you still hoping to hear a cancellation?
Fuzz – I can’t seen to find a definitive answer as to just how much snow NYC has gotten in this last storm. I’ve heard anywhere from 16 inches to +2 feet!
I took my doggie out for a walk this morning at 4am and the streets were covered in black ice, Yeah, I’m hoping the RMC decides to postpone.
Looks like it was cancelled – I just received the following via email:
———-
Downed trees and closed roads is the morning report. More snow is predicted too.
There is no snow date, so we’ll have to wait till next year.
Thanks
